One of the oldest Canadian newspapers, La Presse, has done the seemingly unthinkable yet obvious transition last week. From January 1st, this 132-year-old ‘newspaper’ is not available in paper format on weekdays (the Saturday paper will still be available). The only way to access it on a weekday will be to use your ipads and scroll through the pages. Nearly all the major newspapers around the world have already entered the digital space but what comes as a surprise is that La Presse decided to let go of the weekday paper version altogether.
Here’s a lovely article on this transition by Frédéric Filloux where he talks about the meticulously planned and phased approach the newspaper took to make it a seamless shift. Whatever be the result of this decision, this case study is definitely going into an MBA curriculum, sooner than later. So go ahead and enjoy today’s Needull from me – Inside La Presse+.
If news has a future, the weekday paper is on deathwatch.
